Lesson books
Level 1
Level 1: The next step toward your musical goals. These books are full of songs with duets to play with an experienced pianist to make the student sound more like they know what they’re doing!
Level 2A
Level 2a: An introduction to real rhythm. These books take the student to reading more than simple patterns. The songs begin to sound more rounded with eighth notes and chords.
Level 2B
Level 2b: The book that usually gets kids excited to practice. Fun Christmas songs, a few arrangements of actual classical music, as well as a true introduction to jazzy sounding songs start to use more than one or two hand positions, challenging the student in a fun way to play the whole piano.
Level 3A
Level 3a: The theory gets real. This book is one that I love when a student comes in carrying it. Full of challenging rhythms and melodies, quick hand jumps and full chords, minor modes of music, and many other musical tidbits, this level is the one where you can actually hear how the skills have improved.
Level 3B
Level 3b: Where speed takes a focus. Harmonies and a quick pace take your student to another level of playing music from multiple genres in a fun way. Listen to the dynamic range, fancy fingering, and techniques all roll in together to play songs fit for a recital.
Level 4
Level 4: The next step toward your musical goals. These books are full of songs with duets to play with an experienced pianist to make the student sound more like they know what they’re doing!

Fun books add a little color to practice time. I usually recommend one or two of these to make practicing more fun for the student. There are so many options to choose from: Jazz, classical, kids songs, and more. Let your student pick a genre they want to play and select a level that matches their grade level or one above for a challenge. Two levels more might get discouraging because of the difficulty level and time it will take to master the song but you know your student! Sometimes a little push will help them break through learning hurdles.

These books work so well through the piano theory timeline. Students who go through this set of books usually learn a little quicker and a little more technically precise but the songs are a little dated and I find that students have a hard time getting inspired by them. I actually use these a lot with siblings. I have started rotating, one student gets the Alfred and the other a Faber and then when they have completed the book, I will supplement with fun songs at the level appropriate for the student and then switch them up. It is really hard to take piano with a brother or sister. The stress of playing the same song as someone else who can play it better is really a challenging thing so having a second set of songs for teaching is VITAL to teaching siblings.
